Program Structure

Construction Fundamentals is delivered through short, focused courses supported by a shared practical demonstration component. Students who enroll in the full bundle also receive a 2-week internship with an industry partner.

Short, Focused Courses

Each course targets a specific skill area, making learning manageable and directly applicable to entry-level work.

Practical Demonstration Time

Students observe and participate in hands-on demonstrations that connect classroom instruction with real job-site realities.

2-Week Industry Internship

Full bundle students receive a 2-week placement with an industry partner to gain real workplace exposure and build professional connections.

Course Overview

Six focused courses covering the foundational skills of residential construction, available individually or as part of the full bundle.

Construction Fundamentals

Short course

The essential starting point for safe and effective work in residential construction. Introduces jobsite expectations, PPE, ladder use, fire safety, common materials, and the concepts of level and plumb.

What Students Will Learn

  • Portable ladder setup, inspection, and the 4-to-1 setup rule
  • Fire safety, flammable material handling, and the PASS method
  • Common materials: dimensional lumber, OSB, plywood, and fasteners
  • Minimum PPE expectations and correct selection of safety gear
  • The difference between level and plumb, reading bubble vials

Learner Outcome

Understand the safety language, site awareness, and material basics required before taking on framing and tool-based work.

House Framing

Short course

Introduces the structure of a residential wood-frame building and teaches how major framing components fit together from foundation to roof. Emphasizes sequence, layout accuracy, rough openings, and structural load transfer.

What Students Will Learn

  • Platform framing sequence: sill plates, joists, subfloors, wall framing, roof framing
  • Identification of studs, plates, headers, trimmers, cripples, rim joists, rafters, and trusses
  • Wall layout at 16 inches on centre with clear stud position markings
  • Cutting and assembling wall sections, checking crown direction
  • Squaring methods, plumb checks, temporary bracing, and rough openings

Learner Outcome

Explain how a residential frame goes together and understand the sequence, terminology, and quality checks required in entry-level framing work.

Roofing & Exterior Work

Short course

Introduces learners to basic concepts, materials, and safety practices involved in exterior construction. Focuses on exterior workflow, safe work at height, tool handling, and introductory knowledge of weather protection systems.

What Students Will Learn

  • Basic ladder safety and safe movement during exterior tasks
  • Roofing and exterior materials used in residential construction
  • Safe handling and cutting practices for exterior materials
  • Awareness of weather protection systems and their role
  • Cleanup, organization, and controlled workflow during exterior tasks

Learner Outcome

Understand the basic purpose of roofing and exterior systems and approach entry-level exterior work with stronger safety awareness and workflow discipline.

Drywall, Concrete & Finishing Basics

Short course

Introduces foundational finishing and support work for both interior and structural completion. Combines introductory awareness of drywall installation, concrete-related support tasks, and basic finishing principles.

What Students Will Learn

  • Basic drywall workflow: measuring, handling, cutting, fitting, and fastening
  • Surface preparation and accurate installation practices
  • Finishing concepts: seam treatment, patching awareness, surface prep
  • Basic concrete and masonry support: safe handling and mixing awareness
  • The importance of consistency, patience, and neat workmanship

Learner Outcome

Understand the basic processes involved in drywall, concrete support work, and finishing tasks, and contribute more effectively to interior and structural finishing environments.

Flooring & Tiling Basics

Short course

Introduces the practical foundation of floor surface work in residential construction. Focuses on layout awareness, surface preparation, material handling, safe cutting, and the importance of precision.

What Students Will Learn

  • Floor and tile material awareness including handling and storage
  • Surface preparation: checking readiness, cleanliness, and levelness
  • Introductory layout techniques to improve appearance and efficiency
  • Safe cutting practices for flooring and tile-related materials
  • Measurement, planning, and alignment for clean finished results

Learner Outcome

Understand the basic preparation, layout, and support practices involved in flooring and tiling work, with a stronger appreciation for precision and finish quality.

Demolition, Site Preparation & Tool Maintenance

Short course

Teaches how to remove materials, prepare work areas, and care for commonly used tools in a safe, controlled, and professional way. Emphasizes that demolition is a planned activity requiring hazard checks and tool control.

What Students Will Learn

  • Pre-demolition checks: identifying hazards, planning sequence, protecting structures
  • Safe use of common removal tools based on the material being removed
  • Debris handling, cleanup routines, and work-zone control
  • Awareness of hidden services before cutting
  • Basic tool maintenance: inspection, storage, blade awareness, and cleaning

Learner Outcome

Participate in demolition, site preparation, and tool care in a way that is safer, cleaner, and more useful to the overall project.
